Personal Picks: Hulu On Your Phone, OMGICU, Google Profiles and More

Our staff really knows how to pick 'em. Check out their sweet selections for the week.

OMGICU
If you're a fan of Gawker Stalker and unashamed to love Gossip Girl, check out OMGICU. This participatory gossip site lets you send in celeb-spotting from your phone anytime and get text alerts if you're near a "person of interest". In its own words:

"Living in New York, you see famous people all the time. Sometimes they are doing slightly inappropriate things. Don't save it for brunch. Join OMGICU, stay alert, and text your sightings to 60270."

With the motto "If you see something, say something. ;)," OMGICU sounds like the ultimate product of our times.

Google Profiles
Personal privacy online is a constant struggle. Active participants in social media must deal with a complicated balancing act that encourages them to be increasingly open about their personal and professional lives, yet still aware of how that information might be perceived by outsiders. If you’ve ever tried “Googling” yourself then you know the uber-search engine is perhaps one of the hardest sources to manage.

This week Google announced a new tool called “Profiles” that allows you to customize the links and personal information that comes up in your name search. In some ways it moves Google more towards what social media sites like Facebook and MySpace already do--let users determine what the web says about their lives. But we have to ask: Does this give users more control over their online identities? Or is it simply a tool to help Google collect more information about who we are online?

FanBridge
This easy-to-use email and mobile fan list management tool has been earning itself a strong reputation by helping bands big and small bands “unlock the power of their fans.” It’s not unlike iFanz and USync.net, which also aid artists in managing their fan lists using email services, as well as Mozes, which markets to fans via their mobile device. However, FanBridge combines the best of each of these by integrating email and mobile services… plus it’s free depending on the volume of messages you send. Now all I have to do to take advantage of FanBridge is become a rockstar.

Stylish Add-on for Firefox gives your browser a makeover
A Firefox add-on I’m loving a lot right now is called Stylish. By installing it and looking for great design makeover codes, you can customize anything from Facebook to Gmail to your Vista. For instance, by placing the Stylish code for Facebook, you immediately remove all the stories from the "Highlights" panel in the right sidebar of the new Facebook homepage layout. Aside from that, I’ve installed a YouTube code which strips all the rubbish and displays only the movie at the top.

If you don’t know how to code, don’t panic; there are heaps of free stylish codes you can use that work fantastic. In any case, nothing is permanent. There are codes to redesign and remove clutter from almost every major site we all browse and good folks are adding new stylish codes daily so have fun with it and bring Stylish back to your Browser!

ExecTweets – It’s Twitter: Business Class
With all the Twitter hullabaloo, your boss is now tweeting too. It’s official - Ashton Kutcher has inspired millions and corporate executives are giving it their shot. Everyone from the CEO of Cisco to the top marketing maven at Best Buy are tweeting to the world and you can find them all through an aggregator site called ExecTweets. So, for a little bit of Biz Buzz 101 from the top on everything from branding to the bottom line, ExecTweets can be your one-stop-shop. How do I know? A little birdie told me, “because it’s everybody’s business.”

Hulu iPhone app
It may not be the first mobile TV app to be released for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but it has potential to be the best. The Alley Insider has reported that a Hulu app is being developed for release within the next few months and is supposedly “badass”. Although AT&T currently has MobileTV, the service is expensive and grossly underused (only 3% of mobile subscribers watch video on their phones). A popular Hulu app could be just what is needed to boost video views on the handset. As the Insider points out, the whole idea of the App Store is to sell more iPhones/AT&T service, which is precisely the reason an app such as this would be approved. Stay tuned!
